In the build-up to Real Madrid’s Tuesday visit to Elche, a solidarity gesture intended for Ceuta became a more complicated statement. Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Konaté wore a campaign shirt folded across the chest, concealing part of its message while still joining an initiative focused on the Spanish autonomous city on Africa’s northern coast.
The news from the club
The shirts were distributed to both sets of players before Elche and Real Madrid met in LaLiga’s sixth round. They formed part of a wider show of support for Ceuta, where migration crossings have intensified in recent months.
Thousands of people have reached the city since the end of July, while more than 90 migrants have died trying to enter the territory. Deaths have included drowning and crush incidents as people attempted to pass the maritime barrier separating Ceuta from Morocco.
Mbappé said the decision to wear the garment had been arranged by the clubs, but explained that he and his teammates made a personal choice about how to display it.
“I stand completely with Ceuta and with every victim,” Mbappé said. “Before I am a footballer, I am a human being. I also wanted to remember the immigrants who have died and those living in very difficult circumstances.”
The campaign used the phrase “We are all caballas”, drawing on the local nickname for Ceuta residents. The reverse of the shirt carried the city’s name and Spain’s crest. The lower section covered by Mbappé and Vinícius included a smaller reference to Ceuta and its “knights of the sea”.
That detail gave the campaign a political edge. Ceuta is Spanish territory but sits on the Moroccan side of the Strait of Gibraltar, and its status has long been a source of tension between Madrid and Rabat. Displaying the shirt in full was therefore seen by some as an expression of Spanish sovereignty.
Mbappé stressed that his gesture was not directed against Ceuta or its people.
“It was not an easy position,” he said. “People could think that I am against the people of Ceuta, but that is absolutely not the case. I support them fully. At the same time, I wanted to think about everyone who is suffering. I do not want to rank one person’s pain above another’s. I hope to send a message of peace and positivity, and that this can be resolved soon.”
Real Madrid regarded the approach taken by Mbappé, Vinícius and Konaté as a matter of individual sensitivities, which did not match the club’s institutional position in this instance.
A message across LaLiga
The Ceuta initiative was not confined to Elche. It was also staged around Levante’s match with Barcelona and Villarreal’s meeting with Real Betis during the same round of Spanish league fixtures.
What began as a collective show of support for a city facing a humanitarian emergency thus travelled through the matchday with a second meaning attached: Ceuta’s grief, its border and its unresolved place in the relationship between Spain and Morocco.
