As the international break fades, Kylian Mbappé returns to the spotlight in Madrid with a familiar tactical question following him back to club football. Real Madrid are preparing to face Villarreal on Saturday night at 21:00, but the focus has again fallen on how the France captain can share the same attacking stage as Vinicius Junior.
José Mourinho has already dismissed the recent controversy around Mbappé as “ridiculous”, yet the debate over his partnership with the Brazilian has not gone away. There is no suggestion of a personal feud between the two forwards. Instead, the concern is that they continually measure themselves against each other, including in their work without the ball. One view from inside the club is that when one does not track back, the other is unlikely to do so either.
Vinicius is also said to have been frustrated by the way Real Madrid supported Mbappé’s Ballon d’Or campaign. But the larger issue is sporting rather than personal: both players naturally drift towards the left side, occupying closely similar areas when they start together.
A problem of balance, not talent
Real Madrid have no shortage of individual brilliance, but the current shape can leave the side exposed. With Mbappé and Vinicius offering limited defensive contribution, the team can effectively be forced to defend with eight players. At the other end, their preference for accelerating play and attacking the same channels can make the forward line difficult to organise over a full season.
Those close to the situation believe a structural adjustment is required if the pair are to improve as a partnership. A former staff member has argued that the issue will remain unresolved unless one of Mbappé or Vinicius eventually leaves, while another assessment is that Real cannot progress without a significant tactical change.
The difficulty has already challenged Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. Mourinho now faces the same equation as he attempts to prevent a third successive campaign without a major trophy for the Spanish giants.
For now, he is not expected to drop Vinicius. That means Mbappé, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward, should again line up alongside him against Villarreal — two elite left-sided attackers asked to find room for each other under the lights in Spain.
