Mbappé says all victims deserved recognition
Mbappé said the clubs had decided that players should wear the shirt, but insisted his response was not directed against Ceuta or its population.
“I want to explain it so people understand,” he said. “First, I stand with Ceuta and with every victim. Before I am a footballer, I am a human being.”
The Real Madrid forward said he also wanted to acknowledge migrants who had died and those still living in extremely difficult circumstances. He described the situation as difficult, adding that he did not want one group’s suffering to be treated as more important than another’s.
“People may believe I am against the people of Ceuta, but that is absolutely not the case,” Mbappé said. “I have nothing against them and support them completely. But I also wanted to think about everyone who is suffering. I do not want to rank suffering.”
The 2026 Ballon d’Or candidate said scenes of people in distress affected him deeply. “There are people suffering, and it makes me very sad to see that in the world,” he said. “I want the best for the world we live in.”
Tebas criticises the players’ decision
LaLiga president Javier Tebas was among those to condemn the gesture, arguing that the occasion was not one for individual views to be expressed.
“I think it is wrong,” Tebas said. “These are not personal acts where you should state your own opinion.”
Mbappé answered that his intention had been peaceful. “I want to send a message of positivity and peace, and I hope this situation is resolved quickly,” he said.
Vinicius and Konaté had not made public comments on the episode at the time of Mbappé’s explanation.
