Barcelona’s rebuilt Spotify Camp Nou carried the sound of a full Clásico night, from the unaccompanied club anthem to the whistles that greeted Marc Cucurella’s first touch. But at half-time, with the home side unbeaten in the league and protecting its lead at the summit, Real Madrid had found the one decisive break: Kylian Mbappé’s 42nd-minute goal gave José Mourinho’s visitors a 1-0 advantage.
The match, in the 10th round of the 2026-27 LaLiga season, had opened at a relentless pace. Barcelona produced more attempts before the interval, nine to Madrid’s six, and forced Andriy Lunin into four saves, but the visitors were sharper in the moments when the game broke open.
Quick facts
- Real Madrid led Barcelona 1-0 at the interval through Mbappé.
- Mbappé scored after Gerard Martín’s attempted clearance from a Diomandé cross rebounded off the French forward.
- Thibaut Courtois missed the match with a flu-like illness, leaving Lunin in Madrid’s goal.
- Barcelona lost Xavi Espart to injury after 30 minutes, with Alejandro Balde replacing him.
- Aurélien Tchouaméni received a yellow card early in the second half for a late challenge on Pau Cubarsí.
Hansi Flick had named Joan García behind a defence of Espart, Cubarsí, Gerard Martín and João Cancelo. Pedri and summer arrival Rodri formed the midfield base, with Lamine Yamal, Fermín and Gordon supporting captain Raphinha.
Mourinho selected Lunin; Federico Valverde, Ibrahima Konaté, Dean Huijsen and Cucurella; Tchouaméni and Bernardo Silva; Arda Güler, Jude Bellingham, Diomandé and Mbappé. Madrid arrived without the suspended Vinícius, while Courtois, Raúl Asencio and Rodrygo were unavailable; Barcelona were also missing Jules Koundé, Dani Olmo, Eric García, Andreas Christensen and Roony through injury.
Before kick-off, Flick stressed concentration rather than occasion. He said Madrid were an outstanding side but Barcelona had “a great deal of potential”, adding that his players had built enough experience of these fixtures over the previous two years. He also praised Lamine’s season, attitude and mentality.
The hosts began with possession but also with loose passes. Pedri’s early error allowed Güler a sight of goal, though the midfielder fired over. Gordon tested Lunin twice from distance, while Lamine’s attempted through ball after a Huijsen mistake was misplaced when a shot might have been available.
Barcelona had complaints over Cucurella’s treatment of Lamine. The Madrid left-back was penalised for pulling the teenager’s shirt, then avoided cautions after further fouls on Fermín and Lamine. Juan Martínez Munuera, taking charge of his fifth Clásico, also drew protests when he awarded a soft-looking foul against Lamine and did not punish a later challenge on the winger.
Espart’s injury altered Flick’s back line after half an hour. Balde came on at left-back, Cancelo moved across to the right, and Barcelona continued to seek openings through Lamine and Gordon. A move involving both wide players ended with Raphinha narrowly missing, while Fermín’s long-range effort took a touch off Huijsen before reaching Lunin.
Madrid were dangerous whenever Barcelona misplaced the ball. Güler sent one counterattack into a corner, Joan García swept quickly outside his area to stop another, and Cubarsí stood up well to Mbappé in a duel. The goalkeeper also dealt alertly with passes aimed in behind for the French striker.
The biggest Barcelona chance came in the 44th minute. Lamine got through alone against Lunin but put his finish wide, leaving the home side to rue an opportunity that had arrived shortly after Madrid had struck.
Diomandé delivered from the left in the 42nd minute, and Gerard Martín’s clearance in the six-yard area did not travel clear. The ball struck Mbappé and deflected into the net beyond Joan García. Mbappé later hit the post from an offside position, while Diomandé sent another Madrid break into the side-netting.
The half-time numbers underlined Barcelona’s territorial work but not the scoreline: four of their nine efforts were on target, compared with two on target from Madrid’s six. Mourinho’s side had absorbed pressure and carried greater threat on the counterattack.
Madrid were late returning for the restart, and the second half began with fresh edge. Tchouaméni was booked in the 46th minute after catching Cubarsí late with his studs. Lamine then beat Cucurella to win a corner, but his next involvement brought a turnover that allowed Madrid to break, with Gerard Martín tracking back to deny Bellingham.
The setting had been built for a major evening in Barcelona. Aitana Bonmatí watched from the stands, Barcelona wore the special shirt bearing Tyler, the Creator’s GOLF branding, and the club anticipated a gate beyond the €16.5 million raised at May’s Clásico, helped by increased VIP capacity. At the interval, however, Madrid held the result that would cut the gap at the top and turn the second half into a test of Barcelona’s unbeaten start.
