In the aftermath of France’s 1-0 Nations League win over Turkey, concern travelled quickly from the national camp to Madrid. Kylian Mbappé scored the decisive goal on Friday, but pain in his left knee soon ended his evening and has now ruled him out of the remainder of the international window.
A goal followed by immediate concern
Mbappé struck nine minutes into the second half after Michael Olise found him in space. The France No. 10 controlled the pass, set himself and drove a right-footed finish into the net.
The celebration did not last long. Mbappé held his left knee while his team-mates gathered around him, before receiving treatment from the medical staff. He initially attempted to continue, but went down again shortly after returning to the pitch.

Zidane unwilling to take a risk
France coach Zinedine Zidane said the injury had left Mbappé in poor condition and indicated that the player would be sent back to Real Madrid rather than being pushed through the rest of the camp.
Zidane explained that Mbappé hyperextended his left knee as he struck the ball for the goal. “Unfortunately, he is not well,” the coach said. “I think he will have to return to Madrid. We will not take any risks.”
He added that the exact extent of the problem would need further assessment, but repeated that the forward would leave the squad because there would be no gamble with his fitness.
France confirm tendon problem
Hours after the final whistle, France officially withdrew Mbappé from the squad for the rest of the FIFA international period. The federation said he has sustained a tendon injury.
His absence affects a demanding closing stretch of Nations League fixtures. France still have three matches to play during this break:
- Belgium, twice
- Italy, at home
Madrid await clarity before club return
Real Madrid will also monitor the medical findings closely. The Spanish club are due back in action on the 10th against Villarreal, before a Champions League meeting with Roma four days later.
For France, the Turkish victory brought three points but an uncomfortable consequence: their match-winner left the pitch in pain, and the next stages of both the international camp and Madrid’s calendar now depend on the condition of his left knee.
