Kylian Mbappé answered Lamine Yamal’s weekend statement with one of his own in Spain, producing a dazzling goal as Real Madrid beat Sevilla. The French forward’s finish, built on a roulette and a sharp double touch, took him to eight Liga goals this season.
Mbappé matches Yamal before moving ahead
- On Saturday, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal was named man of the match after scoring in a 5-2 win over Real Betis. His goal came after a dribble through opponents and a curling effort from distance.
- Real Madrid faced Sevilla on Sunday, with Arda Güler putting Madrid in front.
- Mbappé then doubled the lead after Yan Diomandé found him from the left flank. The 2018 World Cup winner used a roulette to turn towards goal, beat Salas with the outside of his foot, then deceived the goalkeeper with a double touch.
- That strike drew Mbappé level with Yamal in the goalscoring race before he moved beyond the Barcelona teenager by converting a Panenka-style penalty in the second half.
The two players are among the leading contenders for the Ballon d’Or, due to be awarded in London on 26 October. The ceremony comes one day after a Barcelona-Real Madrid Clasico that will bring the pair back into the same spotlight.
