France’s No. 10 left the field with discomfort in his left knee shortly after putting Turkey behind on Friday.
Mbappé struck nine minutes into the second half. Michael Olise supplied the pass, and the forward set himself before driving a right-footed finish into the net to open the scoring. Yet the celebration quickly changed tone: Mbappé held his knees and signalled that he was in pain before receiving treatment from France’s medical staff.
He initially attempted to continue, but soon went down again. Zinedine Zidane then replaced him with Doué, ending an appearance that had begun with another decisive contribution but concluded with concern over the left knee.
A crowded international and club itinerary
France still have three Nations League fixtures to play during this international break: two meetings with Belgium and a home match against Italy. The state of Mbappé’s knee will therefore be watched closely in the days ahead, particularly after a match in which he had already shown the sharpness to decide the opening moment.
Real Madrid will be following the situation from Spain as well. The club are due to return against Villarreal on the 10th, before facing Roma in the Champions League four days later. For France and Madrid alike, the question after Turkey is no longer the quality of Mbappé’s finish, but how quickly he can leave this discomfort behind.
