McCann Lifts Kraken Past Capitals Despite Ovechkin’s First Goal

Jared McCann broke a third-period tie and Ryan Winterton finished it off on a breakaway as the Seattle Kraken skated out of Capital One Arena with a 5-3 win over the Washington Capitals on Sunday. Alex Ovechkin opened his season’s goal account for Washington, but Seattle’s road trip started with a second straight victory.

Key takeaways

  • McCann snapped a 3-3 game at 14:33 of the third period with a low wrist shot past Logan Thompson.
  • Winterton sealed Seattle’s 4-2-0 record with a breakaway goal at 17:20 and also set up Frederick Gaudreau.
  • Gaudreau has scored three times over his past two games after recording a goal and an assist in Washington.
  • Ovechkin scored for the first time this season, while Jordan Kyrou netted his first goal since joining the Capitals.
  • Joey Daccord stopped 33 shots for the Kraken; Thompson made 22 saves for Washington.

Kraken find the extra push in the third

Seattle took the lead three times and finally made it stand in the final six minutes. McCann carried the puck into the Washington zone, got around defenseman Timothy Liljegren and fired a low wrist shot beyond Thompson to make it 4-3.

Winterton added the insurance marker less than three minutes later, converting his breakaway at 17:20. The Kraken have now won consecutive games to open a five-game swing away from home.

Gaudreau continued his early scoring run with his third goal in two outings. He gave Seattle a 3-2 edge at 13:24 of the second period, taking Winterton’s pass in the slot, slipping around Thompson and tucking the puck into the net. Winterton had a goal and an assist, while Ben Meyers contributed two assists.

The Capitals had pulled even just 46 seconds into the third. Boone Jenner held the puck at the blue line, drove it toward the net and buried his own rebound in front of Daccord.

Washington answers, but cannot close it out

Kaapo Kakko opened the scoring at 6:06 of the first period. Vince Dunn’s shot from the point was stopped by Thompson, but Kakko collected the rebound near the bottom of the right circle and squeezed it between the goalie’s left skate and the post.

Kyrou answered at 11:41, finishing a cross-ice feed from Cole Hutson from the lower part of the left circle. The goal was Kyrou’s first with Washington after he arrived from the St. Louis Blues in a June 23 trade.

Ovechkin then put the Capitals ahead 2-1 at 16:47. Seattle defenseman Peter Evans lost the puck behind his own net, Ilya Protas found Ovechkin in front, and the captain snapped a wrist shot past Daccord.

Jordan Eberle restored the tie before intermission, scoring at 19:49 after Thompson stopped his initial chance and the Seattle forward batted home the rebound at the far post.

Washington, now 3-2-0 after seeing its two-game winning streak end, generated plenty of work for Daccord but could not recover after McCann’s late winner. Seattle’s goaltender turned aside 33 shots in the 5-3 decision.
