Andy Green will keep the Mets’ manager’s office beyond this season after the club removed his interim label Tuesday and agreed to a three-year contract with the 49-year-old.

Green earns the permanent job
Green stepped in during late June after Carlos Mendoza was replaced, taking over a club that has endured a frustrating season but has played closer to .500 under its new skipper. The Mets carried their 31-28 post-All-Star-break mark into Tuesday night’s game against the Rangers in Arlington.
Owners Steve and Alex Cohen pointed to the tone Green has set since taking charge, saying he has gotten through to the roster while demanding more from it.
“Andy has connected with and pushed our players to perform, despite the disappointment of the season,” the Cohens said. “Over the last several months he has brought discipline, accountability and positivity to the clubhouse, attributes we were seeking in our next manager.”
A clubhouse fit
Green said the permanent assignment was not part of his expectation when he first accepted the interim post. But as the weeks passed, he found a role that matched both his experience and his investment in the players and staff around him.
“When I accepted the interim role, I didn’t anticipate it becoming permanent,” Green said. “But the more time I spent with our players and staff, the clearer it became that this is where my passion and experience could make the greatest impact.”
The three-year deal gives the Mets continuity in the dugout after a midseason change, and it gives Green the chance to carry the standards he established during the interim run into a full offseason and beyond.
