2026-27 NBA Opening Week Begins With Stunning New Star Pairings

Opening-day roster calls are due by 5 p.m. ET, and the first look at the 2026-27 rotation picture has already delivered a few jolts: LeBron James is running Philadelphia’s offense, LaMelo Ball is pairing with Anthony Edwards in Minnesota, Giannis Antetokounmpo has landed in Miami, and Kawhi Leonard is back in Toronto.

The regular season opens Tuesday with an NBC and Peacock tripleheader: Celtics at Pistons at 3 p.m. ET, 76ers at Knicks at 7 p.m. ET, and Thunder at Spurs at 9:30 p.m. ET. It is the start of an 82-game schedule, with the Emirates NBA Cup group stage set to begin Oct. 30.

From the locker room

Philadelphia’s new top-end group got a useful preseason rep together even in a loss to Boston. James logged eight points, eight rebounds and a team-high seven assists in his first preseason appearance in Philadelphia, continuing the playmaking role he showed with five first-quarter assists in his debut at Brooklyn.

James set up each of the Sixers’ other stars in the Boston game. Joel Embiid finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists, Tyrese Maxey scored 22, and Jaylen Brown added 20 points and eight boards. The trio supplied 69 points, while Maxey also fed James for a transition alley-oop that became James’ first preseason basket in a Philadelphia uniform.

The immediate question is how quickly that four-man core can settle its possession hierarchy. The Sixers will see a familiar defensive opponent right away at Madison Square Garden.

Minnesota’s new backcourt partnership has looked comfortable in limited preseason minutes. Edwards led the Timberwolves at 19.8 points per game in 22.6 minutes across four exhibitions, while Ball led the club with 5.8 assists in 19.4 minutes.

Ball said his priority is to simplify the game for the group. “I want to make the game easier for everyone,” he said after his first preseason action. “The more we play, the easier and easier it’s going to get.”

Elsewhere in the reshuffled league, Antetokounmpo posted 20 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists and three blocks in 24 minutes during his Miami preseason debut. Leonard scored 21 points in 17 minutes in his first Raptors appearance since helping Toronto win its only championship in 2019.

Indiana also received an encouraging update from Tyrese Haliburton, who returned to Iowa State for an emotional homecoming 472 days after he tore his right Achilles in the 2025 NBA Finals. Haliburton followed that return with consecutive games of at least 17 points for the Pacers.

Damian Lillard is back after a torn left Achilles and has begun forming a connection with new Portland teammate Ja Morant. Nikola Jokić delivered what he called his personal favorite assist, while Victor Wembanyama continued to provide the kind of disruptive two-way flashes San Antonio expects.

Opening night matchups

Detroit enters its opener after a 60-win season, the franchise’s best total since 2005-06. Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren will again carry the Pistons, who lost to Cleveland in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Their first test comes against a Boston team that went 4-0 in preseason.

The Celtics averaged a league-high 126 points in those four games, with Jayson Tatum scoring 21 per night, the second-highest preseason average in the NBA. Detroit, however, finished second in defensive rating last season. The opener puts Boston’s fast-starting offense straight against a proven defensive unit.

New York begins its title defense by hosting a Philadelphia roster that barely resembles the team the Knicks swept in last spring’s Eastern Conference semifinals. New York held the Sixers to 102 points per game in that series, limiting Embiid to 18.7 points per game and Maxey to 18.3. James and Brown give Philadelphia two more creation options for the rematch.

San Antonio’s West finals win over Oklahoma City remains the backdrop for the late game. The Spurs won four of five regular-season meetings and then eliminated the Thunder in seven games. OKC had the NBA’s best regular-season record at 64 wins, but injuries to Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell helped drag its West finals offensive rating to 107.9, down 9.6 points from its overall playoff mark.

Williams is healthy entering the new season, and the Thunder have reworked the supporting cast around their core. The assignment remains daunting: solve Wembanyama and a Spurs team that ended OKC’s championship defense.

Rotation notes around the league

The opening-week national schedule keeps moving after Tuesday. On Wednesday, Miami hosts Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, putting Antetokounmpo’s Heat against Edwards and Ball’s Timberwolves. It will mark the regular-season debut for both Antetokounmpo in Miami and Ball in Minnesota.

Six additional nationally televised games are scheduled across the next three days. For front offices, the immediate deadline comes before any of them: all 30 clubs must submit their opening-day rosters by 5 p.m. ET.

Those final spots matter in a league increasingly built around playable depth. No team has repeated as champion since Golden State in 2017 and 2018, and no club has reached consecutive NBA Finals since the Warriors in 2018 and 2019. The championship-level question is no longer limited to the first five; it extends through the bench units that must survive the regular season and stay viable in May and June.

MVP race opens with familiar names

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander begins the season as the reigning back-to-back Kia MVP after finishing ahead of Jokić and Wembanyama last year. All three received first-place votes. A third straight award would put Gilgeous-Alexander alongside only three other players in NBA history.

Antetokounmpo enters his first Heat season as a natural contender. The two-time MVP has remained in the top four of the voting in each of the five seasons since his consecutive wins, and his move to Miami gives him a fresh stage for a statement season.

Jalen Brunson arrives as the reigning NBA Finals MVP after guiding the Knicks to the championship. The New York guard has carried the momentum from June into a season where the Knicks again expect to sit near the top of the East.

Cunningham has an MVP case tied directly to Detroit’s trajectory. The Pistons posted the league’s best record last season, and if Cunningham remains the best player on another elite team, he will be firmly in the conversation.

While NBA opening night waits for Tuesday, the WNBA Finals continue Monday night in Golden State. The Valkyries can take a 2-0 lead over the Dream, who are trying to level the series, in Game 2 at 8 p.m. ET on USA, Peacock, CNBC and E!.
