The Mets closed the book on Christian Scott’s season Tuesday, placing the right-hander on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his left knee while bringing Devin Williams back from the injured list in Arlington.
Scott’s final turn came Saturday against the Phillies, when he allowed three runs across 4 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old finishes 4-5 with a 3.85 ERA over 23 starts, a meaningful workload in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery in 2024.
The knee issue ends Scott’s year with only six games remaining on the Mets’ schedule, but it does not appear to change the larger view of his place in the club’s plans. He has put himself in a strong position to enter next spring competing for, and potentially holding, a spot in the Opening Day rotation.
Williams returns, but not for a full closer’s workload
Williams, 32, had been sidelined since early August by right shoulder inflammation. His return gives the Mets another experienced late-inning arm, though the club intends to handle him carefully through the final week.
Rather than assigning him every potential ninth-inning opportunity, the Mets will build his usage around scheduled throwing days. If a save chance does not line up with one of those dates, another reliever could get the ball. The plan calls for Williams to pitch roughly twice over the final six games.
Williams carries a 4.66 ERA into his return and remains under contract for two more seasons. For now, the priority is not squeezing every possible save from the closing spot; it is getting him safely through a controlled finish and into the offseason with his shoulder in good shape.
