Mexican Players Manage Just 65 Minutes in European Midweek Action

Across the European midweek, Mexican footballers found the continent’s stages largely closed to them. From Porto to Copenhagen, six players were named in squads for Champions League, Europa League and Conference League fixtures, yet their combined involvement amounted to only 65 minutes from a possible 540.

It was a thin return spread across Portugal, the Netherlands, Greece and Denmark: barely more than one full match between Obed Vargas, Álvaro Fidalgo, Santiago Giménez, Mateo Chávez, Armando González and Rodrigo Huescas. For a national group seeking rhythm in the club game, the figures underline how restricted opportunities have become.

A scattered European contribution

In the Champions League, Giménez was the only Mexican to enter the field. The Porto forward played the closing five minutes against Real Betis. Atlético de Madrid’s Vargas remained on the bench, as did Betis midfielder Fidalgo.

More playing time arrived in the Europa League, though not much more. Chávez came on for AZ Alkmaar and featured for 15 minutes in their 2-1 win over Hapoel Be’er Sheva. At Olympiacos, Armando “Hormiga” González was used for 24 minutes as the Greek side earned a 1-0 victory against Olympique de Marseille.

Huescas supplied the largest individual contribution of the six in the Conference League. The Copenhagen full-back played 21 minutes in a 3-0 win over Braga, continuing his return to match sharpness after the injury he sustained in 2025.

An added concern for Mexico

The limited club minutes come alongside the absence of Raúl Jiménez, Mexico’s starting centre-forward at the World Cup. He is expected to be out for at least three months, with an early-February return anticipated.

For now, Mexico’s European contingent is present across the continent’s competitions but only intermittently visible on the pitch. The next rounds will offer another chance for that balance to change.
