Michael Olise Sent Off as Bayern Draw 3-3 With Viking Stavanger

In Munich, Bayern’s 3-3 draw with Viking Stavanger has left Michael Olise facing an uncomfortable lesson in composure. The French attacker was sent off for the first time in his professional career on Tuesday, and Bayern surrendered two points after losing their numerical advantage in the closing stages.

The news from the club

Bayern had recovered from a 2-0 deficit and appeared on course to complete the turnaround against the Norwegian side. That changed in the 74th minute, when Viking captain Zlatko Tripic provoked Olise and the Bayern player responded by throwing the ball into his opponent’s face.

The referee dismissed Olise, reducing Bayern to 10 men for the final phase of the match. Viking Stavanger then made their extra man count, finding an equaliser in the 90th minute to secure a 3-3 result.

Lothar Matthäus, one of Bayern’s defining former figures, criticised Olise’s reaction while acknowledging that opponents will deliberately target elite players in an attempt to unsettle them.

“That cannot be done, even if the referee does not see it,” Matthäus said of the incident. He accepted that teams will try every possible way to remove a player of Olise’s quality from the game, but maintained that the winger had allowed himself to be drawn into the confrontation.

Matthäus stressed that the dismissal damaged more than Olise’s own evening. “He has not only hurt himself; above all, he has hurt the team,” he said.

There is no call from Matthäus for Bayern to impose a financial punishment on the player. Instead, the episode is viewed as a public warning for Olise: his talent can decide matches for Bayern, but he must handle provocation better if the club is to avoid another costly late collapse.
