Mike Evans has become an immediate difference-maker for the San Francisco 49ers, producing through broken ribs as the club heads into a Monday night meeting with the Washington Commanders.
Evans has 24 receptions, 326 receiving yards and three touchdowns in his first five games with San Francisco. His latest impact came in Sunday’s 32-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, when he helped ignite the fourth-quarter drive that put the 49ers ahead with 11:02 remaining. He later caught a two-point conversion that extended the margin to three points.
The veteran wide receiver sustained the rib injury in Week 3 but has remained in the lineup. Quarterback Brock Purdy praised Evans’ willingness to keep playing despite the pain.
“He’s a dog,” Purdy said. “He competes through everything and gives this team all he has, even when he is dealing with something physically.”
Purdy said Evans’ availability early in the season reflects both his character and his commitment to teammates. The quarterback also called Evans a game-changing outside receiver who can punish defenses when given favorable opportunities.

Evans said he views playing through injuries as part of his responsibility when he is able to contribute.
“Nothing is guaranteed in this league,” Evans said. “If I can be out there and help the team win, that is what I want to do. A lot of guys here are battling through injuries and leaving everything on the field.”
The move to San Francisco marked a major career change for Evans, who spent 12 seasons as a centerpiece of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offense. He chose the 49ers rather than staying in Tampa on a contract at market value, joining a roster led by Purdy, running back Christian McCaffrey and tight end George Kittle.
Evans has dealt with several hamstring injuries during his career and also played through a broken collarbone and a concussion last season. With a potential Hall of Fame future ahead of him, he has made clear that the pursuit of another championship is a priority.
Week ahead
San Francisco will host the Washington Commanders on Monday night. Evans enters the matchup as a central part of an offense seeking to build on its comeback win over Seattle, with his health remaining a key issue after he played the past two weeks with injured ribs.
