MLB has put a shorter regular season and a longer early playoff round on the table in labor discussions, proposing a move from 162 games to 154 beginning in 2029.
The result
The proposal would trim eight games from the current schedule while expanding the Division Series from its present best-of-five format to a best-of-seven series.
No agreement has been announced. The changes were presented in bargaining with the players, meaning the 162-game regular season and best-of-five Division Series remain in place for now.
The rotation next
The proposed 2029 start date leaves time for negotiations to determine whether the reduced schedule and expanded Division Series become part of the game’s next calendar.
