Monaco Hold Ligue 1 Lead After Toulouse Draw as PSG Close In

Monaco’s afternoon in the principality ended with relief rather than celebration as Filipe Luís’ side surrendered a two-goal lead against Toulouse but still remained top of Ligue 1. The 2-2 draw left the door open for the chasing pack, yet results elsewhere ensured the leaders retained first place.

Key takeaways

  • Monaco lead Ligue 1 on 14 points after drawing 2-2 with Toulouse.
  • Lille moved into second place with 13 points after beating Le Havre.
  • Lyon lost to Lens and Paris FC were beaten by Lorient, missing the chance to reach Monaco’s total.
  • Paris Saint-Germain defeated Le Mans 3-1 at the Parc des Princes and are now three points off first place.
  • PSG’s victory was their third consecutive league win before Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Manchester City.

A lead lost, but first place retained

Monaco appeared to be heading for a comfortable home victory after Diop and Abline gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage before the interval. Toulouse, however, changed the mood after the break.

Tengstedt pulled one back from the penalty spot, and Oppong levelled the contest in the 15th minute of the second half. The dropped points could have cost Monaco the summit, but their nearest challengers did not take advantage.

Lille’s win over Le Havre brought them to 13 points and into second. Lyon, who could have matched Monaco’s tally, were defeated by Lens, while Paris FC also failed to close the gap after losing against Lorient.

PSG build momentum before Europe

In Paris, the reigning champions continued their climb with a 3-1 success over Le Mans. Lucas Beraldo put Luis Enrique’s team ahead in the 19th minute, converting a penalty.

Le Mans responded early in the second half through forward Mafouta, but PSG quickly restored control. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored to regain the lead before attacking midfielder Akliouche added the third.

The result took PSG to 11 points, placing them within three of Monaco after three straight Ligue 1 victories. Their attention now turns from the Parc des Princes to the Etihad Stadium, where they face Manchester City on Wednesday in the second round of the Champions League league phase.
