Paris Brunner’s bright start to life in Monaco colours has been interrupted by a disciplinary ban after the young forward’s goal celebration at Strasbourg earlier this month.
Two-match ban for Monaco forward
The LFP disciplinary commission has handed Brunner a four-match suspension, with two matches to be served immediately and the other two suspended.
The sanction follows Monaco’s 1-1 draw away to Strasbourg on 12 September. After scoring at La Meinau, the German attacker made a gesture mimicking a knife cutting across a throat.
- Suspension: four matches in total.
- Immediate ban: two matches.
- Suspended punishment: two further matches.
- Effective date: Tuesday 29 September.
Ethics body referred the celebration
The National Ethics Council brought the matter before the league’s disciplinary body after examining the incident.
Frédéric Thiriez, president of the council, had explained that the body could open a case on its own initiative, without requiring a complaint or a report from either the referee or match delegate.
He said the gesture appeared capable of breaching the principle of exemplary conduct set out in French football’s ethics charter, while stressing that the council itself did not decide the punishment. That responsibility rested with the disciplinary commission.
Brunner to miss Toulouse and Lorient
The decision removes Brunner from two upcoming Ligue 1 fixtures for Monaco.
- Toulouse at home — 10 October, 20:45.
- Lorient away — 18 October, 17:15.
The ban comes at an awkward moment for Monaco, with Brunner emerging as one of the club’s early-season attacking successes. He has scored six goals in seven appearances in all competitions.
