Mourinho Benches Vinícius as Mbappé and Diomande Start for Real Madrid

Madrid returns to league duty with a sharper edge on Saturday, as Real Madrid host Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu carrying the weight of their defeat to Atlético Madrid into the eighth round of La Liga. José Mourinho has made a notable attacking decision, leaving Vinícius Júnior among the substitutes while handing Yan Diomande a starting place alongside Kylian Mbappé.

Mbappé has been cleared to start after recovering from a left-knee injury that had put his participation in doubt. The French forward’s return offers Real an immediate lift after the international break, with the home side needing to close ground at the top of the table.

Vinícius among a strong Real Madrid bench

Vinícius had not scored in the derby defeat against Atlético and had faced criticism in Spain before the international window. His recent performances have brought scrutiny over uneven form, a reduced attacking output and his struggle to regain the influence he showed in earlier campaigns.

Mourinho’s selection leaves the Brazilian forward alongside Bernardo Silva, Eduardo Camavinga, Endrick and Denzel Dumfries on the bench. Federico Valverde will captain the side.

Real Madrid start with Thibaut Courtois in goal; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Álvaro Carreras in defence; Aurélien Tchouaméni, Valverde, Arda Güler and Jude Bellingham across midfield; with Diomande and Mbappé leading the attack.

Pressure after the derby

The hosts begin the weekend fourth in the Spanish standings on 15 points, six behind leaders Barcelona. Their setback against Atlético came in the previous league round, making the Bernabéu meeting an important moment in their response after the international break.

Villarreal arrive in Madrid in ninth place with eight points. The match is scheduled for 16:00 Brasília time at Real Madrid’s home ground.
