Mourinho Clashes With Spanish Media Before Real Madrid’s Champions League Tie

In Madrid, on the eve of another Champions League assignment, José Mourinho’s attention was pulled back to a stormy domestic night against Villarreal. The Real Madrid coach faced questions about refereeing and whether his players might now be reluctant in challenges, responding with clear irritation at what he felt was a lack of candour in the Spanish media.

A dispute carried from Villarreal

  1. Real Madrid beat Villarreal in a league match overshadowed by Vinícius Júnior’s dismissal after he pulled an opponent’s hair.
  2. Mourinho did not attend the post-match press conference following that game.
  3. Days later, ahead of a Champions League fixture, he again declined to give a full explanation for his absence or to dissect the Villarreal match.
  4. Instead, he told reporters to study the opening minute of the contest, suggesting that it contained all they needed to understand his position on the officiating.

The Portuguese manager said that anyone familiar with the game should look at that first minute and draw their own conclusions, adding that the matter could be discussed again on Saturday.

Mourinho challenges the questioning

The exchange sharpened when a journalist asked whether Madrid’s players could find it harder to compete for the ball after the recent decisions. Mourinho replied that the reporter already knew the answer, but was unwilling to state it openly.

He then criticised what he regarded as an indirect approach from Spain’s football press. In Mourinho’s view, there were situations with little room for uncertainty, yet too few people in the media were prepared to offer firm, specific opinions about them.

Rather than expand on the referee’s performance at Villarreal, Mourinho left his complaint hanging over the Champions League build-up: one minute of footage, he maintained, was enough for those who understood the context.
