Napoli return from the international break with another concern for Massimiliano Allegri, as Antonio Vergara has joined an injury list that had already been lengthened by Favasuli and Olivera. The setback arrived while the young midfielder was on Italy duty, turning a productive spell with the national side into a difficult start to his return to club football.
The coach and the club
Vergara underwent medical tests at Pineta Grande Hospital after suffering a problem during Italy’s Nations League meeting with Turkey. The examinations identified a moderate strain to the soleus muscle in his right calf.
The 2003-born player has already begun his rehabilitation programme, with Napoli now waiting to understand how long Allegri will be without another option in his squad.
His injury came after a demanding international window. Vergara played 28 minutes against France before completing 84 minutes at the Dall’Ara against Vincenzo Montella’s Turkey.
There was, however, some encouragement for Napoli amid the latest medical update. Giovane, Alex Meret and Leonardo Spinazzola have all returned to full group training following their respective physical issues.
For Allegri, the coming days will therefore bring a mixed picture: three players moving closer to selection, but Vergara beginning a recovery process just as the championship resumes its rhythm.
