Niklas Dorsch has begun his MLS spell with Toronto FC after 118 Bundesliga appearances for Heidenheim and Augsburg. Nearly two months into life in Canada, the midfielder says both the city and the league have offered a different rhythm.
A new base in Toronto
- Dorsch moved with his wife and son into a small house with a garden outside Toronto.
- The family’s dog, a Great Dane called Nacho, was due to complete the journey from Frankfurt via New York before travelling on by car to Toronto.
- The former Bundesliga player has signed a contract running until 2031, setting up a five-year overseas chapter.
Toronto FC have already provided an unusual start. Dorsch has not faced Lionel Messi, but has had to play wearing a protective mask.
MLS quality surprised Dorsch
Dorsch said the relaxed atmosphere around the city has helped his family settle. He also admitted that he had underestimated the standard of football in MLS.
“It is different, but it is good,” Dorsch said. “People are very relaxed. I had underestimated the quality of the football, even if that sounds a little strange.”
He pointed to the way MLS is often discussed in Europe, while stressing that Toronto have met strong opponents. The absence of relegation has also changed the competitive pressure.
“We have good opponents,” he said. “The pressure is a little lower without relegation. It is all very interesting. It is already a great experience.”
