Norway step into a new tier on Thursday night, with Denmark arriving for a Nations League opener that carries more weight than a meeting between neighbours usually does. Kick-off is set for 20:45 as the Norwegians begin life in League A for the first time, rewarded for a rise that has gathered pace over recent seasons.
Their place among the competition’s top division follows an impressive 2026 World Cup campaign, in which Norway reached the quarter-finals. Denmark, by contrast, did not qualify for the tournament, a sharp reversal in the recent balance between the Scandinavian sides.
Norway have also found greater consistency since November 2025. They have suffered only three defeats in that period, with each loss coming against a nation ranked inside FIFA’s top 10. Denmark arrive with more uncertain form, having won two of their last five matches.
Haaland leads Norway’s attempt to end a long wait
History still gives Denmark a measure of comfort. They have not lost to Norway since 2002, while Norway must overcome the absence of Atlético Madrid forward Alexander Sørloth, who has been injured since pre-season.
Yet the hosts have a major threat of their own in Erling Haaland. The striker comes into the international window after scoring seven goals in five Premier League appearances, and he will be central to Norway’s hopes of making their first League A campaign begin with a statement.
Denmark’s Nations League away record offers Norway further encouragement. The Danes are without a victory in five away matches in the competition, drawing twice and losing three times. Thursday’s contest therefore gives Norway the chance to end a 24-year winless run against their neighbours while confirming that their recent progress is more than a fleeting surge.
