Matchday two of the Champions League will place three Spanish clubs under different European officials on Tuesday, with Atlético de Madrid hosting Manchester United, Barcelona travelling to Galatasaray and Villarreal welcoming Napoli at La Cerámica.
Sweden’s Glenn Nyberg has been appointed for Atlético’s meeting with Manchester United. The 37-year-old will work alongside assistant referees Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Soderkvist, while Kristoffer Karlsson takes the fourth-official role. Dutch pair Pol van Boekel and Dennis Higler will oversee video duties.
Nyberg has previous European history with Diego Simeone’s side. In February, he handled Atlético’s 3-3 draw away to Club Brugge in the first leg of the knockout-round play-off for the last 16, a night that left the tie finely balanced.
Barcelona’s trip to Istanbul will be refereed by Italian official Marco Guida. Giorgio Peretti and Giuseppe Perrotti have been named as his assistants, with Fabio Maresca fourth official. Marco di Bello and Aleandro Di Paolo will operate the VAR system.
Guida, 45, is familiar with Hansi Flick’s Barcelona. He took charge of their 1-1 draw at Newcastle in the first leg of last season’s round of 16, and had also refereed the Catalan club in a 3-2 defeat at Antwerp during the 2023-24 Champions League group stage. Barcelona now face a demanding atmosphere at Galatasaray, where an early result could shape the rhythm of their league-phase campaign.
Germany’s Daniel Siebert will oversee Villarreal against Napoli. Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn are the assistant referees, Max Burda is fourth official, and Soren Storks and Bastian Dankert will be responsible for VAR.
Villarreal have not lost in the three previous European matches refereed by Siebert. They drew 3-3 at Spartak Moscow in October 2018 and won 1-0 away to Dinamo Zagreb in April 2021, both in the Europa League. Their Champions League encounter under the German ended level at home to Juventus in February 2022.
Elsewhere on Tuesday’s programme, Spanish referees Carlos del Cerro and César Soto have been assigned to VAR duties for Inter’s match against Club Brugge.
