Olympiakos head to Marseille with momentum after edging Panathinaikos 1-0 in Sunday’s Greek derby, four days before their Europa League meeting with OM.
Quick facts
- Olympiakos beat Greek league leaders Panathinaikos 1-0 on Sunday.
- Former Saint-Étienne defender Panagiotis Retsos scored the only goal.
- Remo Freuler supplied the decisive pass.
- Olympiakos finished the match with 10 men.
- Marseille host the Piraeus club in the Europa League on Thursday.
The win was a significant one for Olympiakos, who began the weekend third in the Greek standings. Panathinaikos had previously taken every available point, but their lead has suddenly narrowed.
Retsos, once of Saint-Étienne, struck after being picked out by Freuler. Olympiakos protected that advantage despite losing a player and ending the evening a man short.
Panathinaikos remain top, although AEK are now only one point behind them. Olympiakos have closed to within two points of the leaders.
Imanol Aguacil’s side will now turn from a fierce domestic contest to their European trip. Thursday’s Europa League tie against Marseille arrives with Olympiakos carrying a derby victory into the French night.
