Pablo Osvaldo remains under intensive care in Argentina after undergoing emergency surgery for a condition affecting his right lung.
The former Italy international, now 40, was taken to hospital in Llavallol, on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires, on Thursday evening. Doctors acted quickly after diagnosing a pleural effusion on the right side of his chest, involving fluid and pus around the lung.
Biopsy carried out after emergency procedure
Osvaldo underwent surgery soon after arriving at hospital, with medical staff also carrying out a biopsy of the pleura, the tissue surrounding the lungs. The tests are intended to rule out any potentially serious long-term illness.
He is still being monitored in intensive care while awaiting the results. Those findings will determine whether he can be moved to another hospital department.
His family said over the weekend that Osvaldo was doing well and remained alert.
Former Italy striker retired in 2020
Born in Argentina and capped by Italy, Osvaldo scored four goals in 14 appearances for the Azzurri during his playing career. He represented clubs including AS Roma before retiring from football in 2020.
Since stepping away from the game, Osvaldo has spoken publicly about his battle with depression. In 2024, he discussed that difficult period and his decision to focus more closely on music, his other major passion.
