Patrick Kane Receives Hero’s Welcome in Blackhawks Return

Patrick Kane’s return to the United Center came with the kind of reception reserved for franchise pillars. Before Chicago’s home opener against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, the Blackhawks crowd rose as the longtime No. 88 stepped onto the ice for the first time since rejoining the club.

A full-circle night for No. 88

The Blackhawks set the stage with a pregame video featuring Kane’s biggest moments in Chicago, with the veteran narrating the tribute himself. The message centered on the pressure of playing in major moments, the expectations of a city that demands wins, and the history attached to the organization.

“I have played on the sport’s biggest stage and heard that kind of roar,” Kane said in the video. “This city, this team and these fans expect the best. The standard is to win, and there is always history waiting here. Honestly, it feels good to be back.”

When the video ended, Kane skated out between illuminated No. 88 displays as the building erupted in a standing ovation.

  • Tuesday’s ceremony took place before Chicago faced the Blues in its home opener.
  • The date also marked 19 years since Kane’s first appearance at the United Center in 2007.
  • Kane originally arrived with the Blackhawks for the 2007-08 season.

Championship history in Chicago

Kane spent his first 14 NHL seasons in a Blackhawks sweater and became one of the defining players of the club’s modern championship run. He helped Chicago lift the Stanley Cup three times, in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

His original Chicago tenure ended when he was dealt away during the 2022-23 season. Kane then played for the New York Rangers before continuing his career with the Detroit Red Wings.

The return is now official

Chicago brought Kane back on July 23, signing him to a two-year contract worth $16 million. The deal carries an $8 million average annual value and reunites the veteran winger with the organization where he built his legacy.

The pregame salute made clear that Kane’s history with the Blackhawks is not being treated as a closing chapter. At the United Center, the No. 88 era has another puck drop ahead.
