Payton Pritchard, Celtics Agree to Two-Year $44.2M Extension

Payton Pritchard is set to remain in Boston beyond the current shape of his contract, with the Celtics agreeing to a reported two-year, $44.2 million extension that runs through the 2029-30 season.

The extension includes a mutual option in its final season, leaving both Pritchard and the Celtics with a decision point before 2029-30. The clause could open the door to a new agreement, or allow either side to move in a different direction.

Pritchard’s Boston climb

  1. Boston selected Pritchard out of Oregon with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
  2. He became a meaningful rotation piece during the Celtics’ 2024 championship run, supplying energy and backcourt depth off the bench.
  3. His scoring rose from 9.3 points per game in 2023-24 to 14.3 in 2024-25, a leap that earned him the 2025 Kia Sixth Man of the Year award.
  4. Pritchard then moved into a larger workload in 2025-26, posting personal bests of 17.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 32.3 minutes per game.
  5. The new extension adds two years to a four-year agreement that had him under contract through 2028, keeping his deal on the books through 2029-30.

Minutes matter in the next Boston cycle

Pritchard’s value has grown alongside his role. What began as a bench spark has developed into a regular high-minute backcourt assignment, with his 32.3 minutes per night last season reflecting the trust Boston has placed in him.

For the Celtics, the extension secures a guard who has already delivered in both postseason and regular-season roles. Pritchard’s championship experience, Sixth Man award and career-best production give Boston another established piece as it maps out its rotation beyond the current contract window.
