Barcelona will welcome back one of the defining figures of its modern golden era on Friday, when Pedro Rodríguez returns to the Spotify Camp Nou to mark the end of a 20-season professional career. The 39-year-old Canary Island forward announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from football, closing a journey that carried him from Barça’s academy-built dominance to England and then Italy.
Pedro’s farewell will take place at 11:30 local time in the Auditori 1899, where he is due to explain the decision and reflect on a career that brought 776 official appearances for Barcelona, Chelsea, AS Roma and Lazio. He also played 65 times for Spain, contributing to the international side that won both the World Cup and the European Championship.
His most enduring club chapter came in Barcelona, where he made 321 competitive appearances and scored 99 goals. Twenty of his 25 career trophies arrived in the blaugrana shirt, with his collection including three Champions League crowns, five Spanish league titles, three Copas del Rey, four Spanish Super Cups, two Club World Cups and two UEFA Super Cups. Across his wider honours list are a Premier League title, a World Cup and a European Championship.
After leaving Catalonia, Pedro joined Chelsea and won the Premier League in London before beginning a lengthy Italian spell. He represented Roma first and then Lazio, remaining with the capital club until the conclusion of last season.
Barcelona responded to his announcement with a message of gratitude, telling the forward that he will always belong to the club’s history and thanking him for his contribution to both Barça and the game. Friday’s gathering offers the city a final chance to salute a player whose trophies were plentiful, but whose place in one of Europe’s great teams was secured by much more than silverware.
