Pellegrini Calls for Real Betis Discipline Ahead of Porto Clash

Seville returns to the Champions League stage with Manuel Pellegrini urging Real Betis to pair ambition with the discipline required by Europe’s most demanding nights. Porto arrive at the Benito Villamarín as leaders in Portugal, and the Chilean coach sees the fixture as the first step in a home sequence that could define Betis’s route through the competition.

A European night in Seville

Pellegrini said his squad feels the weight of representing the club on its return to the tournament, with a clear determination not to let supporters down. Betis come into the match encouraged by their domestic form, having beaten Osasuna after a lengthy break.

  • Betis will set aside La Liga matters for the visit of Porto.
  • The Portuguese side lead their domestic league and bring extensive Champions League experience.
  • Pellegrini identified four home fixtures as a crucial opportunity for Betis to collect points.
  • The immediate target is to reach either the round of 32 or the last 16 before assessing how far the campaign can go.

“The team is in good shape, as the results show,” Pellegrini said. “It was important to return from such a long break by beating an important opponent such as Osasuna. Now we turn the page, put the league to one side and try to win these four home matches.”

Porto demand a complete performance

While confident Betis can take all three points, Pellegrini stressed that Porto will pose a serious test. The visitors are familiar with this level year after year, and he believes Betis must combine strong individual displays with collective consistency to overcome them.

The coach wants his side to reproduce the qualities shown in recent matches: commitment, intensity and the confidence to play with personality. He also pointed to the strength of a group which offers him options during a calendar of matches every three days.

“We feel capable of winning, although it will be a very difficult opponent,” he said. “We need high-level individual performances and the team to function well.”

Pellegrini cautioned that lofty hopes must eventually be validated on the pitch. Betis, he said, should always seek the highest possible finish in every competition, but their European standing will be determined by whether that ambition matches the football they deliver.

Antony available as Isco returns

There was encouraging selection news for the hosts before Porto’s trip to Andalusia. Antony is fit enough to be included in the squad, although Pellegrini did not confirm whether he would start.

  • Antony has recovered sufficiently to make the matchday selection.
  • Pellegrini will decide later whether the Brazilian begins the game.
  • Isco’s return has pleased the Betis manager after the midfielder scored twice in the previous match.

Pellegrini welcomed Isco’s contribution, saying he was very pleased to see him back and to see him score two goals. Yet the manager’s own focus remained firmly on the next fixture rather than his long record in the game.

“I do not live on memories,” he said. “For me, the most important match is always the next one.” Asked about his longer-term future, Pellegrini left the matter unresolved, saying only that next season would reveal where he would be coaching.
