Pepe Reina Reveals the Moment He Knew It Was Time to Retire

In Madrid, Pepe Reina has described the quiet moment that told him his long career had reached its finish. The former Liverpool goalkeeper, now 43, said retirement became unavoidable when he suddenly felt empty, a sensation that cut through the competitive appetite which had carried him through more than two decades in the game.

Reina played on until the age of 42, a remarkable span for a goalkeeper who travelled through Spanish, English, Italian and German football and was part of Spain’s World Cup-winning generation. Yet he recalled that there was a point at which his mind made the decision before anything else could. “Retirement came knocking when something clicked and I felt empty,” he said. “That was when I knew I had to stop; I had nothing more to give.”

Anfield’s lasting sound

The Madrid-born goalkeeper linked his longevity to an instinct that never left him: the wish to keep learning, alongside the humility to remain alert and hungry. He described it as always feeling “the cat scratching”, an image for the restlessness that kept him striving even late in his playing life.

Among the many stops of his career, Liverpool remains a defining chapter. Reina spent eight seasons at Anfield, where he worked closely with Rafael Benítez and became one of the leading goalkeepers of the club’s modern era. With the distance of time, it is the atmosphere as much as the matches that stays with him.

“To hear ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ every two weeks is a privilege,” Reina said, reflecting on the anthem and the familiar pre-match ritual on Merseyside.

His English years also brought regular confrontations with Didier Drogba, then leading Chelsea’s attack. Reina named the Ivorian forward as the opponent who caused him the greatest trouble, recalling him as a recurring headache whenever Liverpool met Chelsea.

For a player whose career crossed borders and generations, the final call did not arrive through a single result or an injury. It came through the feeling that the drive had finally been spent — and that it was time for Reina to put away his gloves.
