Pessina Backs Bologna’s Future After Lecce Win Under Palladino

Bologna’s win at Lecce offered more than three points. It put a young goalkeeper under a sharper light, showed the senior figure on the bench accepting the decision, and gave Raffaele Palladino a result from which to begin a demanding rebuilding phase.

Pessina’s place after the error

Pessina was selected from the start at Lecce despite returning from international duty, a choice that underlined the uncertainty surrounding Lukasz Skorupski after difficulties in the opening weeks and during the international break.

The young goalkeeper then made an error, but Emiliano Viviano believes Bologna should not immediately reverse course. In his view, handing Pessina the role carries an obligation to support him through the consequences of a difficult moment.

  • Skorupski remains an experienced goalkeeper who has performed well for Bologna over several seasons, even if his form has recently dipped.
  • Pessina has evidently earned the opportunity to start, and Viviano said one mistake should not redefine the club’s decision.
  • For Bologna, continuing with Pessina also has a longer-term value because he represents part of the club’s future.

Viviano noted that Pessina entered Serie A at a particularly young age, while his own top-flight debut for Bologna arrived when he was 23. Yet he argued that age alone cannot settle the issue. A prospect who simply remains on the margins may need a move to gain experience, but Pessina can also develop in Bologna if he is genuinely involved.

There is, however, a different burden attached to being the first-choice goalkeeper. Pessina is no longer merely a promising youngster from whom little is expected. Viviano said the player has already displayed talent and composure, adding that his display in Lecce was difficult but calm apart from the decisive error. The response, he suggested, must come through technical work, mental work and continuity.

The loneliness of the goalkeeper’s role

For Viviano, the way a goalkeeper absorbs a mistake depends heavily on personality. Some want to watch the incident again, others avoid it; some recover quickly, while others need more time. The goalkeeper coach’s task is to understand those reactions and find the right way to reach each player.

He described the position as one that demands resilience from the beginning. Goalkeepers grow up knowing they are often isolated when things go wrong, required to live with fear, errors and their own ability. Even so, the individual needs a coaching staff capable of managing those pressures.

Skorupski’s conduct at Lecce was viewed as an encouraging sign. He watched from the bench and embraced Palladino after Enem made it 2-1. Viviano did not see the moment live, but said the gesture pointed to an intelligent response from the Polish goalkeeper.

  • No player enjoys losing his place in the side.
  • Skorupski’s reaction suggested that respect for a teammate and for the group has been placed ahead of personal disappointment.
  • That internal balance could matter as Bologna decide how long to persist with Pessina.

Palladino’s Bologna and a season of transition

Viviano does not believe the defensive department is facing an exceptional crisis. Instead, he sees a club dealing with the consequences of change. Bologna sold Jhon Lucumi in the summer, losing a player he described as extremely strong, and the first coaching appointment of the campaign did not last beyond four matches.

In Viviano’s assessment, the dismissal was not necessarily an indictment of that coach’s ability. But changing manager after only four league games was proof, he said, that the initial appointment had not been the right fit.

Palladino now has the chance to provide that fit. Viviano welcomed the coach’s willingness to speak openly about his ambitions rather than conceal them. He admitted that he had criticised Palladino at times during his Fiorentina spell, but feels that judgment may have been unfair given the number of points he collected and the way he enhanced several players.

The victory at Lecce, therefore, can be read as a possible starting point rather than a final answer. Bologna have enjoyed one of the strongest periods of their recent history, winning the Coppa Italia and competing for European qualification, but have since sold players and changed direction.

Viviano sees a squad with young players and numerous foreigners, one that showed solidity in Lecce but still needs its new coach to understand both the team and its surroundings. He added that Palladino needs time to settle into Bologna, although he described the city as an easy place in which to feel at home.

Attack offers grounds for calm

There is also attacking talent for Palladino to build around. Viviano singled out Nicolo Cambiaghi, Federico Bernardeschi and Riccardo Orsolini, while seeing Roberto Piccoli and Artem Dovbyk as a complementary partnership.

The absence of Jens Odgaard has also been significant, in his opinion, because of the way the forward connects Bologna’s play. With Odgaard available again and the attacking options finding rhythm, Viviano expects Bologna to navigate the season without major alarm.
