In Kansas, Philadelphia Union turned a bleak opening quarter-hour into one of the season’s wildest reversals, recovering from three goals down to defeat Sporting Kansas City 4-3 after four strikes in nine extraordinary minutes.
The visitors had been overwhelmed before the match was 16 minutes old. Andre Luiz scored twice for Sporting KC, while Wyatt Meyer added his first MLS goal, leaving Philadelphia with a 3-0 deficit and little apparent route back into the evening.
That route emerged late. Bruno Damiani began the recovery in the 64th minute, assisted by Cavan Sullivan, and Sullivan himself scored two minutes later to cut the margin to one. Milan Iloski levelled the contest in the 68th minute before Sporting left-back Zoran Bassong turned the ball into his own net in the 73rd, completing Philadelphia’s remarkable comeback.
The result took Union to a 10-10-6 record and 36 points, while extending their winning sequence to five matches. They have now gone 9-0-2 across their past 11 regular-season outings.
Sullivan’s contribution added another notable chapter to a fast-moving spell for the 16-year-old. Having received his first senior United States call-up on Thursday for the September and October friendlies, he scored for the sixth time in six matches. His assist for Damiani was his 12th of the campaign, more than any other Philadelphia player, and his fifth across the last five games.
