A short Pittsburgh audition for Doval
Doval arrived in Pittsburgh shortly before the Trade Deadline, acquired from the Yankees in a deal that sent prospects Omar Alfonzo and Luis Cruz the other way. The Pirates took a chance on a pitcher with a recent All-Star selection and a National League saves title on his résumé, hoping a change of clubhouse could help him regain his late-inning form.
The results were uneven. Doval appeared in 20 games for Pittsburgh, covering 19 innings with a 3.79 ERA. His strike-throwing remained the concern, as he issued 14 walks during that stretch.
