Portugal has placed its focus on the 2030 World Cup preparations, even as the decision over the tournament final remains unresolved. The country will co-host the finals with Spain and Morocco, in what is set to be the first World Cup staged across two continents.
Portugal looks toward 2030
Speaking during the Volta de Portugal, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Margarida Balseiro Lopez said the Portuguese government is working closely with its fellow hosts ahead of a tournament Portugal has never previously staged.
She said Portugal, Spain and Morocco are committed to delivering a competition of high sporting standards while also using the event as a meeting point for different peoples and cultures. Balseiro Lopez described the 2030 finals as a distinctive edition because of its cross-continental format and said the ambition is to make it the finest World Cup yet.
The window
The 2030 World Cup remains on the long-range international calendar, with Portugal now treating the tournament as a major national project alongside Spain and Morocco. The hosts are preparing for an event expected to carry sporting, organisational and cultural significance across Europe and Africa.
A question still hanging over the planning is the venue for the final. Reports had suggested that FIFA president Gianni Infantino would award Morocco the final, but FIFA rejected that claim after a meeting at its Rabat headquarters.
A FIFA spokesperson said it was inaccurate and misleading to state that Infantino had promised the final to any host country, adding that the governing body will make its decision at the appropriate time.
The two stadiums most closely associated with the final remain Spain’s Santiago Bernabéu and Morocco’s Hassan II Stadium. Portugal has not publicly entered that dispute, instead emphasising its enthusiasm for hosting the tournament itself.
