Portugal Impress Without Ronaldo in 4-2 Win Over Denmark

Portugal’s new-look attack swept through Copenhagen with a 4-2 win over Denmark, surviving two Danish comebacks before turning a frenetic night at Parken Stadium into a statement of intent. Without Cristiano Ronaldo, Jorge Jesus’ side played with a high line, aggressive pressing and a front unit built around Gonçalo Ramos and Bruno Fernandes.

Quick facts

  • Portugal won 4-2 away to Denmark at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.
  • João Cancelo, Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha and João Félix scored for the visitors.
  • Mikkel Damsgaard struck once and created Rasmus Højlund’s equaliser for Denmark.
  • Portugal’s next assignment is Sunday’s match against Norway.

There was no cautious opening. Portugal moved ahead inside the first quarter-hour when Ramos’ clever movement opened room for Cancelo, who ran into the gap and lifted his finish over the advancing Hermansen.

Denmark hit back 10 minutes later through Damsgaard. The Brentford midfielder bent a superb effort from outside the area into the top corner, leaving Diogo Costa with no chance despite his full-stretch dive.

Portugal responded almost immediately. Ramos combined sharply with Bruno Fernandes, exchanging passes before the striker beat the Danish goalkeeper at his near post with a toe-poked finish in the 25th minute.

The visitors took that advantage into half-time, but their approach carried risk. Jesus had pushed his defensive line high to support an all-team press, and Denmark exploited the space after the break.

Damsgaard supplied the pass for Højlund’s run beyond the defence. With Rúben Dias closing in, the left-footed forward kept his composure and chipped Diogo Costa to level the match once more. Højlund then marked the goal with Cristiano Ronaldo’s familiar “SIUUU” celebration.

Portugal found another gear in the closing stages. Bruno Fernandes delivered a floated cross towards the far post, where Vitinha arrived unmarked from midfield to head the visitors back in front.

The fourth goal followed on a rapid break. Diogo Dalot carried Portugal forward and João Félix, operating in the second-striker role he favours, finished the move to seal an emphatic result.

It was a night that underlined the attacking direction of this Portugal side: Ramos and Fernandes repeatedly linked the play, while Félix and Vitinha supplied the decisive late impact. The attention now moves quickly to Norway on Sunday.
