Real Madrid carried their perfect Champions League start into the Clásico week with a 4-1 win over Leipzig, but only after Thibaut Courtois had prevented the German visitors from turning a passive first half into a very different night at the Bernabéu.
Courtois produced two outstanding interventions as Leipzig found space against a Madrid side that began slowly, while Arda Güler supplied the incision that gradually changed the contest. Bernardo opened the scoring before the interval, Güler struck after the restart, and Kylian Mbappé and Diomande completed a result that gives Madrid an emphatic European platform before their domestic showdown.
Courtois keeps Leipzig at bay
Fede Valverde again started as captain at right-back, his third consecutive appearance in that role. Madrid’s reshuffled midfield featured an unfamiliar pairing of Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo, while Vinicius Junior returned despite serving a domestic suspension.
The changes did not initially bring fluency. Jude Bellingham led an early break involving Mbappé and Vinicius, but the Brazilian could not meet the Frenchman’s delivery. Vinicius showed effort in recovery work but was not consistently involved, and the links between him and Mbappé remained limited.
Güler, by contrast, was at the centre of Madrid’s most inventive moments. The Turkish attacker combined sharply, controlled the tempo around the penalty area and repeatedly looked for runners, although there was often no final touch to finish his work.
Leipzig, coming off a heavy Bundesliga defeat to Bayern, grew encouraged by Madrid’s lack of intensity. Antonio Nusa beat Valverde with an excellent first touch and dribble, although no team-mate converted his cross. Rômulo then met a loose ball on the volley, only for Courtois to make a remarkable low save to his left.
The Belgian goalkeeper was required again when Nkunku found himself through on goal. Courtois made himself big to deny him, preserving parity amid whistles from sections of the home crowd.
Madrid punish missed chances
Madrid needed only one fast move to swing the match their way. Valverde drove forward from the right and pulled the ball back for Güler, whose effort created a rebound that Bernardo turned in after goalkeeper Maarten Vandervoort was unable to deal cleanly with the loose ball.
Leipzig were visibly affected by the setback after the break. Güler repeatedly released Valverde into space, with Vandervoort stopping one such chance, before Madrid doubled their advantage through a move down the opposite flank.
Vinicius controlled wide on the left and sent Bellingham forward. The England midfielder lifted a cross to the far post, where Mbappé headed the ball back into the danger area and Güler finished from close range.
Martin Demichelis responded with substitutions that suggested Leipzig were protecting their resources for Bundesliga duties rather than mounting a late European rescue. Gruda and Nusa, their most threatening attacking players, were both withdrawn.
There was still one important defensive contribution from Madrid’s captain. Rômulo escaped Dean Huijsen in the area and appeared set to reduce the deficit, but Valverde sprinted back to intervene.
Late goals underline Madrid’s firepower
Mourinho also rotated with the Clásico in mind, taking Vinicius off after more than an hour in which he had not attempted a dribble. Diomande, facing his former club, entered alongside Cucurella, who was jeered by the sizeable Leipzig contingent before Madrid supporters answered with applause.
The closing stages became more open as Madrid eased off their marking. Mbappé collected the ball unmarked outside the box and bent his Champions League goal into the far corner. Leipzig replied immediately through Gomis, whose angled finish exposed a disorganised home defence.
Diomande had the final word. Operating from the left, the Ivorian struck a superb volley into the top corner to seal Madrid’s 4-1 victory and another maximum return in Europe.
For Madrid, the night offered both warning and reassurance: Courtois remains decisive when the structure fails, while Güler, Mbappé and Diomande supplied the attacking edge needed to put the tie beyond Leipzig. The result also sends them into the Clásico with their confidence, and their cutting edge, intact.
