Marseille’s crisis deepened under the lights at the Vélodrome as Paris Saint-Germain left with a 2-1 victory, extending OM’s losing run to five matches in all competitions.
The final fixture of Ligue 1’s fifth round brought another painful evening for Marseille, who will enter the international break in the relegation places after a defeat compounded by the late dismissal of captain Timothy Weah.
PSG strike twice after the interval
After a tense first hour in Marseille, PSG found the breakthrough in the 66th minute through Ferran Torres, whose latest goal put the visitors in front.
Marseille briefly restored belief six minutes later when Angel Gomes pulled level in the 72nd minute. The response was immediate, however, with Marquinhos scoring PSG’s second goal three minutes after Gomes had equalised.
The hosts’ hopes of mounting another comeback were severely damaged in the 77th minute, when Weah was sent off. Reduced to 10 men for the closing stages, Marseille could not find a second equaliser.
Opposite directions before the break
The result leaves Marseille second from bottom in Ligue 1 and prolongs a bleak sequence of five consecutive defeats across all competitions.
PSG, meanwhile, made it three victories in a row. Their win in Marseille continued a growing sense of momentum as the champions head into the international break.
