In Rome, Belgium began their 2026 Nations League campaign with the sharpness of a side already settled into its new coach’s demands, beating Italy 2-0 before turning their attention to France on Monday.
The Ligue 1 news
Paris Saint-Germain winger Mika Godts opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Belgium imposed themselves on Roberto Mancini’s Italy. Dodi Lukebakio, playing wide for Benfica, added the second goal in the 63rd minute to complete a deserved win for Mark van Bommel’s Red Devils.
Van Bommel’s first competitive match in charge offered a clear outline of his tactical approach. Belgium used a 4-3-3 with the ball, shifting into a 4-4-2 shape when defending. Their high press produced recoveries in advanced areas, while quick passing and constant movement around the ball carrier helped launch rapid attacks.
Godts was particularly dangerous from the left. The PSG player repeatedly exposed an Italian midfield and defence that gave him too much room, while Belgium’s territorial control could have produced a heavier scoreline.
Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma prevented that outcome before the interval, making important stops against Charles De Ketelaere and Nicolas Raskin in the 23rd minute.
The hosts did find a response after the break. Belgium began to tire and lost some command during the opening 15 minutes of the second half, but goalkeeper Senne Lammens kept them in front with close-range saves from Moise Kean and Sebastiano Esposito in the 49th and 53rd minutes.
Lukebakio then settled the contest. Left unmarked, he curled a left-footed effort beyond Donnarumma to make it 2-0. The closing stages carried some tension, but Belgium held on for a convincing opening victory.
France await Belgium on Monday
Belgium will now face France on Monday, with Van Bommel’s side arriving after a performance that combined aggressive pressing, direct transitions and the attacking influence of Godts.
