Manchester provided the setting on Wednesday for one of the standout evenings of the Champions League’s second matchday, as Paris Saint-Germain left with a 4-2 victory over Manchester City and sent three points back across the Channel.
The news from the club
PSG took command early at the Etihad, building a three-goal interval lead through Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha. The French side’s sharp finishing gave them a 0-3 advantage before the break and left City facing a difficult route back into the contest.
City did respond after the restart and, for spells, put the visitors under genuine pressure. But PSG held their ground sufficiently to preserve their lead, with the final score settling at 2-4.
The meeting brought together two clubs long associated with vast financial backing, yet the visitors’ success was presented as much more than a collection of expensive individuals. Luis Enrique’s side combined clinical attacking in the first half with a resilient defensive display when City pushed forward in the second.
The result also reinforced Luis Enrique’s earlier belief that PSG could become a stronger collective after Kylian Mbappé’s departure. The Paris club have now won the Champions League in each of the past two seasons, sit at the top of the standings, and are pursuing a third consecutive European crown.
