A decisive evening in the Paris title race
The contest had been due to take place on Sunday at 16:45 Brasília time, but security authorities intervened as demonstrations continued in the city. It will instead be staged the following day, 15 minutes earlier.
The change gives an already significant domestic fixture an unusual place in the Paris calendar. PSG and Lyon are due to meet with leadership of the French championship at stake, with the pair part of a five-club group locked together on 14 points after seven rounds.
Monday’s new kick-off also falls during the Ballon d’Or awards ceremony. PSG will have several representatives connected to the event, among them Dembélé, the current winner of the individual prize.
Protests reshape the capital’s schedule
The demonstrations began weeks ago through a nationwide student movement demanding improved conditions in schools. They intensified last Saturday when participants joined a separate mobilisation against rising living costs.
Disorder and looting have accompanied some of the gatherings in French streets. More than 500,000 people took part in Saturday’s protests, while unrest led to damage at around 1,500 shops and nearly 2,400 arrests.
PSG had nevertheless played Barcelona at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League on the previous Tuesday, winning 4-2. The Lyon fixture, however, has been judged unsuitable for its original Sunday slot as authorities manage the continuing tension in the capital.
