Rabiot Scores as AC Milan Are Held by Sassuolo in Serie A

Adrien Rabiot’s thunderous finish briefly lit up Milan’s night in Reggio Emilia, but AC Milan were unable to carry it through. Sassuolo struck back five minutes later to claim a 1-1 draw and leave the Rossoneri still unbeaten, but outside Serie A’s top four.

Quick facts

  • AC Milan drew 1-1 away to Sassuolo in Serie A.
  • Adrien Rabiot scored Milan’s opener in the 63rd minute from Luka Modric’s pass.
  • Dutch defender Cas Odenthal equalised for Sassuolo in the 68th minute.
  • Mike Maignan made key saves, including a stoppage-time stop from Kristian Thorstvedt.
  • Milan have drawn three of their first six league matches and sit fifth.

The match had drifted along at a subdued pace before Rabiot gave Milan a moment of release. Receiving Modric’s delivery on the left side of the box, the France international drove a fierce shot in from a tight angle after 63 minutes.

That advantage did not last. Sassuolo responded during their strongest spell of the contest, with Maignan already called into action before Odenthal found the equaliser in the 68th minute.

Milan had generally controlled possession, yet the game was disrupted early by injuries. Centre-back Matteo Gabbia left for Milan in the 20th minute, while Sassuolo’s Fedde Leysen was forced off six minutes later.

The goals brought greater urgency. Samuel Chukwueze had a chance to restore Milan’s lead but was denied by the home goalkeeper in the 72nd minute, while Gonçalo Ramos had little influence in attack.

Sassuolo almost turned the evening on its head at the death. Thorstvedt’s effort in the fourth minute of added time required Maignan to stay sharp and preserve the point.

The result gives Milan a third draw in six league outings. They remain undefeated but are fifth in the table, four points behind joint leaders Inter Milan and Lazio, with Cagliari versus Juventus still to be played later on Sunday.
