Rafa Marin Targets Key Role in Allegri’s Napoli Defence

Rafa Marin has returned to Naples with a clearer sense of what he wants from the season: a place in Massimiliano Allegri’s defence and a meaningful role in Napoli’s attempt to remain among Italy’s leading sides.

The decision

The Spanish defender spent last season at Villarreal, a move he believes helped him mature after a previous spell in which opportunities at Napoli were limited. Although Napoli had won the Scudetto two years earlier, Marin felt he needed regular football elsewhere.

“My time at Villarreal was important for my development,” Marin said. “There was not enough room for me at Napoli, so I had to leave to find more minutes. But I always wanted to come back, and now I feel ready to earn my place and help the club reach its targets.”

His confidence also comes from his early relationship with Allegri. Marin said he has quickly formed a positive connection with the coach and appreciates both his approach on the training ground and the way he manages the group.

Asked to compare Allegri with Antonio Conte, Marin avoided making a direct judgement, saying that every coach works in his own way.

For Napoli, the defender sees a demanding but familiar agenda: staying near the top of Serie A, securing a top-four finish, producing a strong Champions League campaign and, if possible, lifting the Coppa Italia.

On a personal level, Marin wants to play as often as he can, contribute to the side’s progress and put himself in contention for a call-up to the Spain national team.
