In Hampshire’s Minley district, Raheem Sterling’s post-football uncertainty has been overtaken by a court case that could carry far more serious consequences. The 31-year-old former England forward appeared in court on Tuesday and admitted responsibility in connection with a road collision on 28 May while driving a Lamborghini after using nitrous oxide.

Sterling was found to have seven canisters of nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, in his possession. He faced allegations of dangerous driving and of declining to provide an air sample to the authorities following the crash.
The former Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal player is due back before the court for sentencing on 25 November. A prison term remains a possible outcome, although his lawyers will argue that an early admission of guilt should support a suspended sentence.
His legal team has submitted a file to the judge containing several character references from former football colleagues. Sterling has no previous criminal convictions and has been given an interim driving ban while the case proceeds.
The Lamborghini involved was valued at around R$2.5 million. Sterling has been without a club since departing Feyenoord in June, following a career that took him through some of England’s leading sides.
At Manchester City, he collected four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup. On the international stage, he made 82 appearances for England and scored 20 goals, playing a prominent part in the run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.
