Head coach Sean McVay said the Rams will not project a firm return date for Garrett until they have a fuller picture of his recovery. Garrett can become eligible to return after four weeks, but the club will evaluate his progress as he rehabilitates from the procedure.
“There isn’t really a timetable yet,” McVay said Monday. “It depends on how everything goes today.” McVay said the team feels encouraged by the situation but does not want to establish expectations before receiving complete medical information.
Garrett played through the knee issue in the Rams’ season-opening game in Australia last week. He produced five quarterback pressures but did not register a sack or tackle. Afterward, Garrett said he did not feel like himself and voiced concern about a knee that had also limited him during training camp.
McVay said the decision to place Garrett on injured reserve became clear shortly after the opener. The Rams had believed the injury could be managed, but Garrett’s condition during the game and his conversation with the coaching staff afterward changed that assessment. McVay acknowledged the club will learn from the decision after having to limit Garrett’s workload in the opener.
Garrett arrived in Los Angeles in a high-profile trade with the Cleveland Browns, and his absence removes a major piece from a defensive line that appeared formidable on paper entering the season. The Rams could be further shorthanded if Aaron Donald remains unavailable.
Donald did not play in Week 1 after returning from a two-year absence. McVay stressed that Donald’s status is unrelated to Garrett’s knee situation, explaining that Donald is still working toward game readiness while Garrett’s issue worsened after he tested the injury in live action.
The Rams have not decided whether Donald will make his return in Week 2, when Los Angeles hosts the 1-0 New York Giants in a prime-time matchup on Sept. 21. McVay said Donald will continue his preparation before the team makes a final call.
