Under the lights at Stade Bollaert, the opening moments of Lens’ Ligue 1 meeting with Lyon briefly carried a message far beyond the pitch. Supporters in the Red Tigers’ usual section displayed a banner condemning what it described as “disproportionate and systematic police violence”.
The banner was visible for a short period at the start of Friday night’s match between RC Lens and Olympique Lyonnais. Its appearance came amid a tense social climate in France, where blockades at secondary schools and universities had multiplied in recent days.
Several of those protests had led to clashes with police and CRS units, called in across the country to clear blocked sites. The Lens supporters’ message directly referred to the incidents surrounding those interventions.
Football crowds in France regularly use the stands as a space for political and social expression, and the display at Bollaert placed the week’s unrest in full view during a Ligue 1 fixture.
