Real Madrid return to league duty with the pressure already sharpened by Barcelona’s nine-point advantage, as Villarreal arrive at the Bernabéu in a fixture carrying the weight of a European-level test.
A league night with Champions League intensity
Villarreal’s early domestic form has not been convincing, but Madrid are facing a side regarded as Champions League calibre and capable of making the contest uncomfortable. José Mourinho’s team need a home win to prevent the gap at the top from growing further.
The match comes with several enforced changes in defence, while the selection also reflects the demands placed on players during the international break.
Mourinho reshapes his back line
- Thibaut Courtois keeps his place in goal.
- Raúl Asencio is unavailable through injury.
- Éder Militão has recovered physically but is not yet considered ready after a lengthy absence.
- Dean Huijsen is suspended.
- Ibrahima Konaté and Antonio Rüdiger form the central-defensive partnership.
- Álvaro Carreras starts at left-back, allowing Marc Cucurella a rest.
- Trent starts on the right, with Denzel Dumfries left out of the XI.
The choice on the right is influenced by the international workload. Trent played 180 minutes during the break, while Dumfries accumulated 350.
Valverde returns as Vinicius waits
Federico Valverde has been restored directly to the starting side after completing Friday’s training session. The midfielder had suffered an ankle sprain following a heavy challenge from Kang-in Lee in the derby, but now lines up alongside Aurélien Tchouaméni, ahead of Bernardo Silva.
Jude Bellingham operates between midfield and attack, with Arda Güler stationed on the right and Kylian Mbappé leading the line. The most eye-catching attacking call is the absence of Vinicius from the starting team: Diomande is selected on the left flank instead.

- Goalkeeper: Courtois
- Defenders: Trent, Konaté, Rüdiger, Carreras
