Solanke’s Stoppage-Time Header Earns 10-Man Spurs Draw at Manchester United

At Old Trafford, where Tottenham’s recent European past met the unease of their domestic present, Dominic Solanke found a way to alter the mood in stoppage time. The striker’s faint header from a Sandro Tonali delivery earned Roberto De Zerbi’s side a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, despite Spurs having been reduced to ten men and trailing with the clock deep into the 92nd minute.

The point did not disguise the difficult opening Tottenham have endured. They had travelled to Manchester with only two points from their first six Premier League matches and at the foot of the table. Their late escape lifted them to third from bottom, while Manchester United, coached by Michael Carrick, remain 12th.

There was an added edge to the meeting between the clubs that contested the 2024-25 Europa League final, won 1-0 by Tottenham. Yet neither side arrived at Old Trafford carrying the assurance suggested by that recent continental occasion.

A missed opportunity becomes a rescue

Tottenham were the brighter visitors before the interval, creating the more threatening openings against an underwhelming United. Solanke was among those unable to convert, and the familiar issue of missed chances looked set to cost De Zerbi’s team once again.

United improved after the restart and introduced Carlos Baleba for his debut in the 59th minute. Their breakthrough came 14 minutes later. Matheus Cunha supplied Bryan Mbeumo, who took advantage of hesitant Tottenham defending before turning and beating goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

Mbeumo then had the chance to extend the lead, but the match changed sharply in the 78th minute. Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off after headbutting Luke Shaw following an incident between the pair, with a confrontation involving players from both teams following the offence.

With Tottenham a man down, the home side appeared set to see out a narrow victory. Instead, Tonali sent the ball into the area in the closing moments and Solanke got just enough on it with his head to guide it beyond the United defence. It was an untidy but vital intervention, preserving a point for a side whose season had seemed ready to sink further in Manchester.
