At Valdebebas, beneath the lights of the Alfredo Di Stéfano, Real Madrid began their Women’s Champions League league-phase campaign with the feeling that two points had escaped them. Pau Quesada’s side led Paris Saint-Germain almost from kick-off, struck the post while seeking a second goal, and then conceded a late penalty as the familiar European meeting ended 1-1.
This was the seventh encounter between the clubs across five seasons, and Madrid arrived with the memory of last season’s landmark victory in Paris. They made an emphatic start in the Spanish capital. In the second minute, Felicia Schröder scored on her debut in Europe’s leading club competition, meeting a precise cross from Caruso on the right and turning it in from close range. It was the Swedish forward’s fourth goal in four official appearances.
PSG, coached by Paulo Cesar, did not retreat after that early setback. Karchaoui’s ninth-minute free-kick caused trouble at the near post, where Chagas could not apply the final touch, while Frohms was called upon to deny Ajibade during a hectic opening spell. The visitors increasingly used their physical presence to interrupt Madrid’s rhythm, committing tactical fouls to slow the home side’s fast attackers and pressing their defence deeper.
The French team carried much of the attacking threat before the interval, with Echegini and Ajibade trying their luck from range, but Frohms dealt comfortably with those efforts. Madrid still had opportunities to extend their lead: Andreia Jacinto found Schröder behind the PSG central defenders in the 32nd minute, only for the striker to send her angled shot wide. Naomie Feller, facing her former club, was also prominent down PSG’s left flank, but Madrid held their shape and reached half-time ahead.
Paris resumed on the front foot, led again by Ajibade, and Linda Caicedo was required to contribute extensively without the ball. Yet Madrid looked especially dangerous once they broke through midfield. Keukelaar won possession in her own half in the 54th minute and launched Caruso forward, with Schröder unable to beat Kiedrzynek after the goalkeeper rushed from her line. The Polish goalkeeper soon produced another important save from Keukelaar.
Madrid then came closest to putting the contest beyond PSG. In the 57th minute, Schröder struck the post, a moment that drew a collective groan from the Di Stéfano crowd. With Caicedo and Schröder providing pace and Athenea introduced to add further energy, the home side appeared well placed to protect their advantage.
The match turned on an incident in the 71st minute. Lakrar was judged to have held Morissaint’s arm inside the Madrid area, and the referee awarded PSG a penalty. Karchaoui converted three minutes later, sending the ball beyond the reach of the diving Frohms to level the score.
Neither side settled for the draw afterwards. Feller drove forward for PSG but placed her effort across goal and wide, while Madrid looked for Beerensteyn and Caicedo with direct balls in pursuit of a late winner. There was no further breakthrough, however, leaving Quesada’s team with a hard-earned point but regret after their early control and missed chances to settle the evening.
