Madrid’s European night returns on 21 October as Real Madrid welcome Leipzig for the third round of the UEFA Champions League league phase, with the Spanish side aiming to protect a flawless start while the visitors arrive looking to turn an uneven opening fortnight into momentum.
Perfect start under pressure in Madrid
Real Madrid have collected six points from their first two Champions League fixtures, having beaten Inter in their opening match before taking a dramatic 4-3 win over Roma.
The Roma match demanded a late recovery from the visitors. Marten de Roon put the Italian side ahead after 20 minutes, but Kylian Mbappé struck five minutes later with a right-footed effort past Pierluigi Gollini.
The contest swung again after the interval, with Donyell Malen scoring in the 51st minute and Matías Soulé extending Roma’s advantage to 3-1 shortly afterwards. Madrid then produced a frantic finish from set pieces.
- Carlos Espí scored in the 83rd minute after Gollini spilled the ball from a corner.
- Endrick headed Madrid level two minutes later, directing his effort inside the right post.
- Antonio Rüdiger completed the turnaround with the decisive goal, sealing the 4-3 result against his former club.
That escape in Rome left Madrid with two victories from two and the chance to make it three consecutive league-phase wins against Leipzig.
Leipzig seek a steadier continental route
Leipzig’s campaign has brought one win and one defeat so far. Their first match ended in a 4-1 loss away to Como in Italy, leaving Martín Demichelis’s side with ground to recover early in the new format.
A narrow victory followed in the second round, when Brajan Gruda’s 75th-minute strike delivered all three points. The result placed Leipzig 21st after matchday two and gave the German club a platform before the trip to the Spanish capital.
