Reinier Finds Fresh Start at Atlético Mineiro After Real Madrid Struggles

In Belo Horizonte, Reinier Jesus has found the sense of belonging that eluded him during a difficult European chapter. The 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder is now settled at Atlético Mineiro, grateful for the club’s faith and determined to repay the effort made to bring him home.

A fresh start at Atlético Mineiro

Reinier arrived at Real Madrid in 2020 in a €30 million move from Borussia Dortmund, but his time at the Bernabéu did not unfold as he had imagined. He nevertheless believes those years changed him, both as a footballer and as a person.

  • He says his spell with Real Madrid fell far short of his expectations.
  • Despite the disappointment, he feels he matured in every respect.
  • His current priority is Atlético Mineiro, where he says he is very happy.
  • He wants to justify the confidence and affection shown by the Brazilian club.

“It was not at all what I had expected, but I think I have grown up a great deal in every way,” Reinier said of his Madrid experience.

Lessons from Madrid and a European ambition

The midfielder did not wish to dwell on the circumstances that affected him in Europe, although he acknowledged that some experiences there had not helped his progress. Rather than reopen that period, he has chosen to take its lessons forward.

Reinier described himself as fortunate to have shared a dressing room with major figures at Real Madrid. He said the established names around him treated him well and offered support when he needed it.

He has not abandoned the idea of another attempt in Europe. “A few things happened to me there, and I went through situations that were not very helpful,” he said. “I do not really like speaking much about it. Hopefully, one day I can return and achieve my goals.”

Madrid return not on the immediate horizon

A future reunion with Real Madrid remains an attractive thought for Reinier, but he made clear that it is not part of his present focus. Asked whether he could return to the Spanish giants, he responded that it would be a dream for almost any player.

For now, however, the destination is Atlético Mineiro. Reinier said the club trusted his ability and invested heavily to sign him, leaving him determined to give everything back on the pitch.

“Why not return to Real Madrid? Who would not like that?” he said. “But this is not the time. I am fully focused on Atlético Mineiro, who believed in me and in my football, and who made a big effort to sign me. I will do all I can to repay that trust and affection.”
